In an era marked by rapid technological advancement, few innovations have captured our collective imagination quite like Artificial Intelligence (AI). Want music? Let’s ask Alexa to play some for us. Lagging behind on bills? Let’s quickly tell Siri to set up a reminder.

In this article, we won’t be discussing what or why AI, everyone is doing that and let’s be honest, you already know that. We will discuss AI projects you can build at home easily without being overwhelmed with the FOMO.

More recently, AI has significantly advanced the field of image editing, making it more accessible and efficient for both professionals and amateurs. Some AI-powered image editing tools available include Adobe Photoshop’s AI Features, Luminar AI, PortraitPro, Remove.bg, and many more.

The Air Around AI

Why is everyone talking about Artificial Intelligence? And why is every parent so concerned about getting their child into AI? Let’s answer these questions in brief so that we’re on the same page.

The past few years have witnessed the growth of technology exponentially, from teaching students online to work-from-home culture, all are a testament to how the world is moving to the digital era. And so must you. The progression from technology to AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a result of decades of advancements in various fields, including computer science, mathematics, and engineering. The start was slow but the AI engine is steering at full speed now.

Some of the reasons why parents are anxious to get their children into AI can be broken down into a list:

  • Future Job Opportunities
  • Competitive Advantage
  • High Earning Potential
  • Intellectual Development
  • Futuristic Appeal and counting…

Moving forward, let’s discuss the AI projects that can be made easily at home and why children should build them.

DIY AI Projects

We have created some easy-to-follow guides that can help your child to create their own AI projects.

  • Digital Counter – One of the easiest to code and control is this Makerboard project that combines Artificial Intelligence and good old programming to form a number on the makerboard display. A more easy way to understand this is to say that you lift some of your fingers and it tells you how many they are. (reminds us of the times we used to tease our friends who wear glasses. doesn’t it?)

  • Gripper Robot – As the name suggests, this is a DIY Robotic project that combines coding, mechanics and Artificial Intelligence to grab and drop objects. It can be easily trained to work on your commands. For ex., we can train it to drop objects on the gesture of an open palm and grab objects on the gesture of a closed fist or vice versa. Or we can use totally different gestures. Sounds cool right?

Why should your child start with these projects?

When we hear the word AI, our minds wander away to the movie Robot and a humanoid taking over the world. But that’s not really the case. At least not in the near future anytime. Artificial Intelligence can sound overwhelming to children who are not familiar with Robotics and Coding and our job is to introduce them to it in a way that doesn’t feel scary. Hence, we start small.

We start with a small counter that recognizes the input and processes it based on the training data and move on to a gripper robot which can also be a part of a humanoid someday. Hence, going from small to bigger steps. This not only feels doable, but children also understand where to start from.

AI projects also instill a sense of responsibility and ethics. As children learn about AI, they become aware of the ethical considerations surrounding its use, encouraging them to develop a responsible approach to technology.

Lastly, AI projects are fun and engaging. They captivate children’s interest, making learning an enjoyable experience. This enthusiasm for AI can lead to a lifelong passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

In a world where AI is transforming industries and societies, preparing children to navigate this landscape is crucial. By introducing them to AI projects early on, we empower them to become responsible, innovative, and technologically literate citizens of the future. So, let’s encourage our children to dive into the world of AI projects, where creativity meets technology, and endless possibilities await.
